There aren’t just tragedies in the media when it comes to celebrities and addiction, as Stephen Moyer recently proved.
“True Blood” star Stephen Moyer shared his experience with alcohol addiction and subsequent rehab for the substance 14 years ago. The actor muses that his issues with alcohol started can be traced to the beginning of his British theater career.
In an effort to mimic the perceived behaviors of the actors he looked up to, such as Peter O’Toole and other numerous heavy drinkers, he began drinking more and more.
Moyer confides that, “there’s this rush that happens from doing our job, this whirring buzz, and you want to continue that buzz.”
The actor further shares that, “self-loathing motivates the desire to get loaded in the first place – and post-sobriety, there is the shame of admitting all of your faults. It’s about education. And it’s about getting rid of that shame.” Getting treatment for his addiction not only turned his life around, but it also led him to his present wife and former co-star, Anna Paquin.
Not only does Paquin wholeheartedly support his sobriety, so do many others in his community. Moyer explains that, “as my wife said this morning, there isn’t a restaurant in Venice or Santa Monica where I would be offered the wine menu. The Diet Coke, which is the patron saint of drinks for alcoholics, gets put before anyone even asks what we’re drinking.”
It’s that kind of unwavering support that Moyer credits to his continued success and commitment to his new life of sobriety.
