Panic Disorder - An anxiety disorder characterized by chronic unexpected episodes of potentially disabling intense fear or anxiety, often accompanied by physical symptoms, such as rapid heartbeat and dizziness.

Paranoia - A mental disorder or an element of several other mental illnesses, characterized by suspicion, delusions of persecution and jealousy.

Partial Program - Usually taking place in a hospital setting lasting 3-4 hours per day. At first an individual goes 5 days per week tapering down as they become more stable. Length of programs is short in duration between 2-6 weeks. Most often these programs are group only (or may include 1 individual session per week) and are cognitive behaviorally based. Often used as a follow up to an inpatient psychiatric stay or a hospital detox.

Passive Aggression - Indirectly and unassertively expressing aggression toward others, masking resentment or hostility.

Paranoia and Paranoid Disorders - Symptoms of paranoia include feelings of persecution and an exaggerated sense of self-importance. The disorder is present in many mental disorders and it is rare as an isolated mental illness. A person with paranoia can usually work and function in everyday life since the delusions involve only one area. However, their lives can be isolated and limited.

PCP - (phencyclidine) or Angel dust,  was developed in the 1950s as an intravenous anesthetic, but its use for humans was discontinued because it caused patients to become agitated, delusional, and irrational. Today individuals abuse PCP because of the mind-altering, hallucinogenic effects it produces. “While using PCP Jennifer didn’t realize she was three stories high when she jumped out of her window to escape her hallucinations”

Personality - Enduring patterns of perceiving, relating to and thinking about yourself and the environment.

Personality Disorder - A broad term for a cluster of 10 different conditions marked by a variety of maladaptive personality traits and behaviors, such as paranoia, narcissism or sociopathy.

Pharmacotherapy - Treatment of disease with prescription medications.

Pharmacy Benefit Manager (PBM) - PBMs are third party administrators of prescription drug benefits.

Phobias - Phobias are irrational fears that lead people to all together avoid specific things or situations that trigger intense anxiety. They occur in several forms, for example, agoraphobia is the fear of being in any situation that might trigger a panic attack and from which escape might be difficult; social phobia is a fear of being extremely embarrassed in front of other people.

Plan of Care - A treatment plan especially designed for each child and family, based on individual strengths and needs. The caregiver(s) develop(s) the plan with input from the family. The plan establishes goals and details appropriate treatment and services to meet the special needs of the child and family.

Point-of-service Plan (POS) - A modified managed care plan under which members do not have to choose how to receive services until they need them. Members receive coverage at a reduced level if they choose to use a non-network provider.

Post-traumatic Stress Disorder - Researchers now know that anyone, even children, can develop PTSD if they have experienced, witnessed, or participated in a traumatic occurrence-especially if the event was life threatening. PTSD can result from terrifying experiences such as rape, kidnapping, natural disasters, war, or serious accidents such as airplane crashes. The psychological damage such incidents cause can interfere with a person’s ability to hold a job or to develop intimate relationships with others. The symptoms of PTSD can range from constantly reliving the event to a general emotional numbing. Persistent anxiety, exaggerated startle reactions, difficulty concentrating, nightmares, and insomnia are common. People with PTSD typically avoid situations that remind them of the traumatic event, because they provoke intense distress or even panic attacks.

Pre-existing Condition - A medical condition that is excluded from coverage by an insurance company because the condition was believed to exist prior to the individual obtaining a policy from the insurance company. Many insurance companies now impose waiting periods for coverage of pre-existing conditions. Insurers will cover the condition after the waiting period (of no more than 12 months) has expired.

Preferred Provider Organization (PPO) - A health plan in which consumers may use any health care provider on a fee-for-service basis. Consumers will be charged more for visiting providers outside of the PPO network than for visiting providers in the network (American Association of Preferred Provider Organizations).

Pre-game - Drinking to catch a buzz before going to any event or party. “Would anyone like to partake in some pre-game antics before we go out?”

Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD) - A severe form of premenstrual syndrome whose symptoms include severe depression, feelings of hopelessness, anger, anxiety and low energy.

Primary Care Physician (PCP) - Physicians with the following specialties: group practice, family practice, internal medicine, obstetrics/gynecology, and pediatrics. The PCP is usually responsible for monitoring an individual’s overall medical care and referring the individual to more specialized physicians for additional care.

Prior Authorization (Pre-Certification) - The approval a provider must obtain from an insurer or other entity before furnishing certain health services, particularly inpatient hospital care, in order for the service to be covered under the plan.

Psychiatric Emergency Walk-in - A planned program to provide psychiatric care in emergency situations with staff specifically assigned for this purpose. Includes crisis intervention, which enables the individual, family members and friends to cope with the emergency while maintaining the individual’s status as a functioning community member to the greatest extent possible and is open for a patient to walk-in.

Psychiatrist - A psychiatrist is a professional who completed both medical school and training in psychiatry and is a specialist in diagnosing and treating mental illness.

Psychomotor - Pertaining to voluntary physical movement.

Psychosis - A mental disturbance characterized by a loss of contact with reality. Delusions and hallucinations are often present.

Psychosocial Rehabilitation - Therapeutic activities or interventions provided individually or in groups that may include development and maintenance of daily and community-living skills, self-care, skills training includes grooming, bodily care, feeding, social skills training, and development of basic language skills.

Psychosomatic - Pertaining to the relationship of the mind and body. Psychosomatic illnesses are those in which physical symptoms are caused or aggravated by emotional factors.

Psychotherapist - The term for anyone who provides psychotherapy, with or without specialized licensure or training.

Psychotherapy - A method of treating mental disorders that involves verbal and nonverbal communication about thoughts, feelings, emotions and behaviors in individual, group or family sessions. The goal is to change unhealthy patterns of coping, relieve emotional distress and encourage personality growth and improved interpersonal relations. Also called counseling or talk therapy.
