The Benefits of Exercising In Drug and Alcohol Treatment

Daily exercise is a great way to stay on top of your health and keep your organs pumping and flowing properly. Recent studies have shown that daily exercise in addition to drug and alcohol addiction treatment, is shown to lower your risk of relapse dramatically.

When you exercise, your body releases endorphins which help immensely with the release of stress and pain. Morphine, codeine, and the releasing of endorphins act very similar in regards to reducing emotions and perceptions of pain in our brain. You may also experience feelings of euphoria, the releasing of sex hormones, and enhancement of the immune response when endorphins are released.

Science is now suggesting that 30-45 minutes of daily exercise should be made mandatory in all addiction treatment settings. Exercise will help patients’ overall physical health, as well as their emotional health. Exercise will also help counteract any withdrawal symptoms that might occur; such as: loss of sleep or lack of appetite.
